Overview
A customized inspection robot equipped with advanced sensors was deployed to navigate and monitor high-risk zones at an energy facility, in environments where human access is limited or dangerous. The robot was designed to detect gas leaks, noise anomalies, and other safety-critical signals. The engagement covered ensuring the technical system met rigorous international safety standards throughout its implementation.

Challenges
The primary challenge was bringing a novel robotics application into compliance with international safety standards without an existing safety framework to build on. Operation in zones where human access is limited or dangerous raised the consequence of undetected failure, requiring an approach that preserved the flexibility to introduce new robotics capability while meeting compliance obligations.

Approach
A specialized safety framework was developed in close collaboration with stakeholders:

  • Internal training to transfer the framework to the stakeholder team
  • Review of current processes and gap analysis of existing systems against relevant requirements
  • Development of a new foundational safety framework for this robotics application
  • Hazard and Risk Assessment (HARA) to identify hazards and define safety goals
  • Functional Safety Concept (FSC) derived from those safety goals
  • System Requirements Specification (SRS) translating the concept into implementable requirements

Key Insights
The project highlighted several important findings:

  • Safety functioned as an enabler rather than a constraint, providing the flexibility needed to introduce cutting-edge robotics
  • A foundational safety framework was a prerequisite for the application, not a downstream compliance step
  • Transferring the framework internally through training was necessary for the stakeholder team to sustain it beyond the engagement

Outcome
The result was an operational inspection robot capable of performing routine tasks in hazardous zones, reducing the need for human exposure. The project demonstrated how robotics can be safely integrated while improving efficiency and protecting the workforce.
